Irene Mounds

The Irene Mounds were likely used between 1100 and 1600 A.D. and is theorized to have been a 'Chief Compound' where the local community's chief lived with his family.

The area was excavated extensively by the Works Progress Administration from 1937 to 1940. The mounds were the most excavated mound site in Georgia. However, the mounds were later destroyed and are now the site of the Georgia Port Authority in Savannah.
