Old Fort Barrington

Built in 1751, this structure helped maintain British defenses along the Altamaha. It was later occupied by American troops in the Revolutionary war (under the name Fort Howe) and by Confederate troops during the Civil War. In 1773, the famous botanist John Bartram discovered the remains of an ancient Native American village which is now referred to as Old Fort Barrington.
