Old Fort Jackson

Fort Jackson was built where Mud Fort was previously located, which was built in 1778. Fort Jackson was established in 1808. In the War of 1812, this fort was used as a signal station. It was named after General James Jackson. Fort Jackson is Georgia's oldest standing brick fortification on the Savannah River. It was a military post for Union troops following the city's surrender in December 1864. From 1867 until 1907, the fort was called Fort Oglethorpe. Now it is a National Historic Landmark and runs educational programs as a Civil War museum.
