Pembroke Old City Jail

This structure was built in 1912 to house offenders for short periods for fighting, public drunkenness, and other minor offenses. In 1938, the City of Pembroke purchased an 1897 vintage two-unit prefabricated cell from the old Bryan County Seat of Clyde. The town of Clyde was demolished to build Fort Stewart by the U. S. Army. The iron cell was dismantled and shipped by wagon to Pembroke, where it was then reassembled inside the jail building. The jail remained operational until the 1950s. In 2003, the Old City Jail was restored as a museum by the Pembroke City Council.
