Savannah Country Club

Savannah Country Club was founded in the 1920s by Henry C. Walthour, a cotton broker, who bought several hundred acres of Wilmington Island. The course was designed by the golf course architect Donald Ross. Originally, the country club was called the General Oglethorpe Golf Course featuring a hotel, but the hotel failed during the 1929 stock market crash (while the course still remained). In 1965, the realtor and developer William Lattimore from Savannah bought the property and renovated the golf course. Lattimore hired the architect William C. Byrd who brought upon many renovations that aligned the course with PGA standards. In 1967, Lattimore renamed the property the Savannah Inn and Country Club. The inn later became the Sheraton Hotel until it closed in the 1980s. After a period of vacancy, the course became its own entity and was called the Wilmington Island Club. In 2018, Brianna and OC Welch III bought the property, renaming it the Savannah Country Club. In addition to the golf course, the country club offers tennis and pickleball facilities.
