Sunbury Cemetery

Sunbury Cemetery is the historic burial ground in Sunbury, Liberty County, Georgia, with some graves dating from 1788 and the most recent from 1911. The cemetery is the only remaining significant structure from what was once a thriving seaport town (Sunbury), which was established in 1758, served as an important colonial port and educational center, but declined in the early 19th century.

Among those buried there is Rev. William McWhir, D.D., and his wife. The Rev. was born in Ireland in 1759 and served for 30 years as principal of Sunbury Academy before he died in Georgia on January 30, 1851. Some burials were made in this plot in Colonial and Revolutionary days, but most of those earlier markers were destroyed before the 1870s.
