Sutherland Bluff
Sutherland Bluff is a natural bluff that overlooks the Sapelo River and the Intracoastal Waterway. The area served as a shipyard for the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War and is named after Lieutenant Patrick Sutherland. Lieut. Sutherland had been granted the site upon the recommendation of General James Edward Oglethorpe, in recognition of that Lieutenant's service at the Battle of Bloody Marsh. Previously, the bluff hosted Native American and Spanish occupants.
